Boat Storage Projects, Knysna, South Africa |
|
For lovers of boating on the open sea, marinas and lagoon pleasure boating, safe boat storage after the fun of the boating holiday and weekend is over, is becoming more and more of a headache. With the increasing value of boats and accessories the boat owner in South Africa has to find secure storage for his boat. Most boat owners want their boats safely stored for the winter months and the periods that they do not use their boats. Boat yards are crowded with boat trailers and many a yard owner can testify about the chaos in the boat yard when boats have to be retrieved and stored or delivered to their owners on time.
For boat yard owners, land also become more and more valuable and scarce for storing power boats with trailers. Traditional boatyards are open or covered flat areas of land. When the boats are in the water the trailers still cover the same piece of land.
The trend of dry rack boat storage has now reached South Africa. Custom designed dry boat storage facilities are now becoming a necessity for South African lakeside marinas and small boat storage boatyards. Secure boat storage can now be provided to boat owners through the project design capabilities of a project design team in South Africa. Stefan Maree from Agripro and Gerrit Nieuwoudt from Nieuwoudt & Kie combined their skills in providing the initiative for dry stack storage design for boatyard owners. The design allow for boats to be stored with or without their trailers. The design can also easily be adapted for car and general storage. A pilot project is on its way in Knysna in the Garden Route to provide boat storage for the vast amount of boat owners in Knysna. The facility will also be multi purposed to allow for vehicle and general storage. To learn more about the project management team, click here. |

Dry-Stack Storage: An investment that is looking up |
|
A very attractive niche market for the self-storage business is the storage of boats and recreational vehicles (RV). While many self-storage operations have occasionally targeted boat and RV customers, their efforts have mostly been in the traditional, single-story approach. Perhaps the time has come for the developers of storage yards to look upward beyond the box to a very worthwhile investment.
An increasingly popular alternative method for storing boats is dry-stack storage. This involves the vertical storage of boats in rack systems that can store them with the same density-storage philosophy as in the warehouse industry. The underlying concept for dry-stack storage is to develop structures that can stack boats from two to six levels high. The predominant method of handling these boats is with large marina forklifts capable of lifting them to rather dramatic heights. These facilities are generally located on or near the waterfront. The systems are used for in-and-out launching and retrieval of boats, as well as winter storage. |
